2024 National Chess Day Tournaments: A Celebration of Talent and Community

On National Chess Day, the local chess community came together for the 2nd edition of the SCC National Chess Day Tournaments, where 91 participants showcased their skills and passion for the game. Hosted by Carmel’s SUMMIT CHESS CLUB (SCC), this year’s tournament was a memorable day of friendly competition and strategy.

SCHOLASTIC SECTION:

The Scholastic Tournament welcomed players from grades 1 to 12, with participants competing across five different grade sections. The energy and enthusiasm were palpable as young competitors showcased impressive strategic thinking and a clear love for the game. Here are the top finishers from each section:

1st Grade & Under
🏆 1st Place: Mason Wang
🏆 2nd Place: Michael Schumm
🏆 3rd Place: Dwij Trivedi
🏆 4th Place: Isha Arun
🏆 5th Place: Reid McMillan

3rd Grade & Under
🏆 1st Place: Alvin Yang
🏆 2nd Place: Amman Ghazaoui

6th Grade & Under
🏆 1st Place: Saanvisri Akkkipally

8th Grade & Under
🏆 1st Place: Saket Sharma

12th Grade & Under
🏆 1st Place: Anas Mohamad
🏆 2nd Place: Eli Sella
🏆 3rd Place: Neo Dong
🏆 4th Place: Levi Brown
🏆 5th Place: Abhiram Ashok

The scholastic competitors showed tremendous potential, with several closely contested games leading to ties.

OPEN SECTION:

In the Open Section, Josh Smith and Ryan McCrea tied for 1st place, with Josh Smith taking home the championship plaque on tie breaks in a highly competitive Pro Section. Meanwhile, in the Reserve Section, Anas Mohamad, Donald Winslow, and Jacob Maynard also tied for 1st place, with Anas Mohamad claiming the championship plaque after the tie breaks. Finally, in the Novice Section, Maximus Wang took clear 1st place and secured the championship plaque after edging out tough competition. The performances of these players reflected the exceptional level of play throughout the day.

Pro Section

🏆 Top U2000: Drew Hollinberger

Reserve Section
🏆 1st Place (tied): Anas Mohamad, Donald Winslow, & Jacob Maynard
🏆 Top U1400: Shyamsundar Balasubramanium & Michael Dugdale

Novice Section
🏆 1st Place: Maximus Wang
🏆 2nd Place (tied): Joshua Wonderly & Spencer Miceli
🏆 Top U800: Thirumala Guntupalli, Neo Dong, & Shriyan Shankar

The success of the SCC National Chess Day Tournaments wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated support of the local chess community. Special thanks to Carmel Christian Church, volunteers, parents, and everyone who helped make this day possible!

It is clear that the SCC National Chess Day Tournaments had not only been a day of competition but also a celebration of community. The success of this year’s event has only fueled excitement for future tournaments, where players of all ages and skill levels can continue to grow and connect through the game of chess.
