South Suburban Chess Wars XV
Aug 21, 2016. On August 20, 2016, the Glenwood Chess Club hosted Chess Wars XV. Richard Zhang, the eventual Open Winner “whupped” the organizer in the first round to win the first and only Bounty Hunter Prize of the day!.

In the U 1650 division, Joseph “the Great” Hooks took 1st place with Richard Lewis and the tournament organizer taking 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

In the U1250 Section, Philadelphia PA visitor, Sean Pry took 1st place, followed by James Marchert Sr. (2nd) and Margery Allen 3rd. Mr. Pry also received the award for the farthest distance traveled as well.

As previously mentioned, in the Open Division, Richard Zhang took 1st and Sam (SE) Henderson followed in 2nd and David Yong finished in 3rd place. However, Richard Zhang left without taking his trophy. David Yong likewise left without receiving his prize. Nevertheless, we will hold them until their next tournament visit.

Because Richard Zhang left, Sam Henderson was seated into the Grand Championship Playoffs by default! Thus, it was Sam Henderson, Joseph Hooks and Sean Pry for the day’s top prize.

In the 1st round, Joseph drew the bye and Henderson and Pry battled in a 5 minute blitz game. Henderson came out ahead in this one and got past the Pennsylvanian! Sean took the 2nd Runner up Ribbon.

Then Henderson and Hooks slugged it out for top honor in a 15 minute Quick Chess contest. When the match concluded, it was Henderson who was the Champion of Chess Wars XV.

Several players stated that the thought the Grand Championship theme and free lunch and refreshments made for an enjoyable and thoughtful tournament!

Mike Herron more perfect in the Cold!

(John Leighton and Andrew Pheasant a little perfect)

Feb. 18, 2016. This years Southern Indiana Open was again plagued by weather extremes. Last year we had 8 inches of snow and my title was "BP2 Perfect in the snow" as Bernard Parham II went 4-0. This year...MAN IT WAS COLD!

46 players bundled up and came to the Holiday Inn in Bloomington and thanks to almost everyone preregistering we got off on time. The 1st rd. went like the ratings would indicate, mostly. Upsets started in the 2nd rd. ISCA Web Editor Terry Winchester beat Dr. Galstain in a Smith-Morra that morphed into an Evans Gambit type attack from the last century. Whippersnapper Max Egan bested Parham but Andy Porter escaped Alex Cordell`s very determined effort to upset him. The 3rd rd. saw the higher rateds win again except for Andy Porter who lost to Andrew Pheasant(OH). That set up  the 4th rd where 5 3-0 and a 2.5 would thrash it out for all the $$.

Mike, John and Andrew  all won with Mike Herron winning the tiebreak battle and emerging as the leader in the ISCA Road to the US Open race in Master/ Expert class. Parham, Bjornstad, Cordell and Brooks(KY) tied for 2nd A with Cordell the leader in the A class Road to the Open race. Max Egan and Bobby Goddin shared B money with Max being the leader in the race to the open.
C money went to Dalton Thompson, Ben Pitchkites, Shawn Marcum and Donald Gregory.

Scot Pletka and Roman Ivanovitch split the D bucks and Scot (2.5 pts) emerged as the C and Under leader in the Road to the Open race.

THE NEXT ROAD TO THE US OPEN QUALIFIER IS THE INDIANA MEMORIAL TNMT  APRIL 23 IN INDY !! SEE YOU THERE!

Craig Hines,

ISCA President

Nov. 14, 2015 OWENSBORO NOVEMBER OPEN - Kentucky

Nov 6-8, 2015 74th Indiana State Chess Championship Indianapolis

Sep 3-12, 2015 South Bend Regional CC Open On a much happier note, we held the South Bend Regional CC Open yesterday at the Hilton Garden Inn in South Bend. Few people took advantage of the early entry discounts, but we had 29 players from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and (technically) Texas. This was up from the 18 players we had last year. Unfortunately, a school in Chicago announce two weeks ago that they were going to hold a tournament the same day as our event, which resulted in some cancellations. Master rated players were admitted into the event free of charge, with $40 being deducted from any prizes won. Only two such players participated: Dennis Monokroussos and Daniel Gater (our technical TX resident).

Monokroussos made a perfect 4-0 run to win our event calming the $210 1st place prize. Gater was stymied by Stuart Krahn in round 1 for a draw, but Gater would win his next three rounds to claim the $105 2nd place prize. Top Expert: Tony Palmer 3-1, Class A: Leslie Kistler and John Roush 3-1, Class B: James Ronco 3-1, Class C: Stuart Krahn and Russell Stinson 2-2, Class D/Under: Albert Nelms 2-2. Four new USCF players also joined us for the event. Planning for next year is already starting, with the possibility that we may develop this into a two-day, five round tournament, or hold a reserve section along side the Open.

Mar 7, 2015 Indiana Blitz and Quick Championships On March 7, 2015, the state championship event for Blitz and Quick was held in South Bend, Indiana! Congrats to John Cole who was the champion for both the Quick and Blitz tournaments. The chess world of Indiana is wondering if Cole can be defeated (in state of course)!!  Dennis Monokroussos provided stout competition with a second place finish in both Quick and Blitz.  The open section had a very strong mix of master and expert level players.

Feb 21, 2015 2015 Southern Indiana Open  Held on a very snowy February Saturday in Bloomington, In.  A small but weather hardy crowd had a great day of chess. Congrats to Bernard Parham II on the victory for the day. Dr. Arthur Galstian was a close second.
